“Corrida” by Ben Wilson is on display at the George Segal Gallery at MSU.

The George Segal Gallery at Montclair State University is presenting a retrospective exhibition of works by an American original, the painter Ben Wilson (1913-2001), through Nov. 4.

The show traces the progression of Wilson’s work from politically charged social realism in the 1930s and 1940s, when he was a WPA artist in New York City, to layered, geometric abstraction. The exhibition includes a core selection of paintings from the artist’s estate given to the university by the Ben and Evelyn Wilson Foundation.

Wilson was part of the group of New York City artists that found homes and refuge in New Jersey, such as George Segal, Will Barnet, Wolf Kahn, Max Ernst, and Man Ray. https://benwilsonamericanartist.org/exhibition/ .

The George Segal Gallery is at Montclair State University, in the same building as the Red Hawk Parking Deck, 1 Normal Ave.
