Award-winning journalism

Montclair Local’s staff of experienced journalists have earned acclaim from inside and outside Montclair since our founding in March 2017.

Our first year of coverage was marked by the New Jersey Society of Professional Jour- nalists, who selected the Local to win its “Engage Local” award.

In 2018, Local staffers won six awards from the New Jersey and Keystone SPJs: associate editor Jaimie Julia Winters won first place for her coverage of Lackawanna Plaza, and third place for investigative journalism; culture editor Gwen Orel won first place for feature reporting, commentary and business reporting; and reporter Erin Roll won third place in the best use of public records category.

Meanwhile, in 2018 Montclair Local became a member of the New Jersey Press Association, which comprises more than 200 daily, weekly and online news outlets.

In our first year of eligibility for NJPA awards, Montclair Local cleaned up: our staff garnered 16 individual awards in the Weekly category, including five first-place honors. That tally collectively earned the Local the NJPA’s “General Excellence” award.

We won the NJPA’s “General Excellence” award once again in 2020, for work done in 19 — and a tally of 24 awards in individual categories.

And the trend has continued: Montclair Local was presented the “General Excellence” award yet again in 2021, for work done in 2020, as well as a slate of 34 awards in individual categories. Of those, 11 were first-place honors.

These awards reflect the exceptional talent of the Montclair Local staff, as well as the ideals of publisher Heeten Choxi, who created the Local to serve our community and provide residents with the important news they can’t get anywhere else.
