Nancy (Townsend) MacDonald of North Carolina, formerly of Montclair, died on June 4, 2021, after a sudden illness. She was 74.
Mrs. MacDonald was born in 1947 and grew up in Montclair.
She was a graduate of Montclair High School, Elmira College and NYU Paris, where she earned her master’s degree in French. She and her first husband, Tom Wilson, served in the Peace Corps in Tunisia and subsequently lived in France and Belgium before returning to the U.S., where they lived in Montclair.
Mrs. MacDonald taught French at St. Cassian School. She was active at First Baptist Church and with the Human Needs Food Pantry, and was a supporter of Montclair High School and Colgate University.
She married Douglas MacDonald in 1999 and moved to North Carolina in 2004 to a home in Ocean Ridge Plantation, where she participated in many community activities. She was an avid walker and swimmer, and loved the beach.
She appreciated classical music, opera and literature, and enjoyed traveling. She played bridge and golf and recently had two holes-in-one. She volunteered at Union Elementary School, tutoring third grade students in reading.
Mrs. MacDonald was gracious and kind, a beautiful lady who loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She will be sorely missed.
She is survived by her husband of 22 years, Douglas MacDonald; three children, Lyndsay Anderson (Steven), Ian Wilson (Alta) and Nicholas Wilson (Kristin); two stepdaughters, Tracy MacDonald and Peggy Kenrick (Chris), and nine grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Tom Wilson, in 1995.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Brunswick Funeral Service in North Carolina on Saturday, June 12, at 11 a.m.
A celebration and memorial service will be held at First Congregational Church in Montclair in the fall.
