Montclair residents have a wide variety of summer camps to choose from for their children — along with programs for adults, some with both online and in-person sessions available. They range from the more traditional programs such as that of the YMCA of Montclair to arts and music specialty camps to outdoor adventure programs. Following is a sampling:

Montclair History Center

The Montclair History Center, Rutgers Cooperative Extension 4-H and the Montclair Community Farms partner each year to host a nature- and history-filled summer camp for youth to learn about the past, and about where food comes from.

Campers have the chance to be in the garden each day and participate in activities related to each age level’s theme.

They spend their days on-site at the Montclair History Center at 108 and 110 Orange Road, where they will have access to the Montclair Community Farm, historic houses and large open spaces.

Farm Camp has a limit of 25 campers per week. All will be required to wear face masks for all weeks of camp.

YMCA of Montclair

The YMCA of Montclair will be offering three camps for youth ages 3-14, from June 28 through Sept. 3.

The camps aim to teach self-reliance and develop attitudes and practices that build character and leadership, amid the fun of sports, art, games, outdoor adventure, water activities and meaningful relationships.

The three camps are New Adventures, for ages 3-8, held at the Geyer Family YMCA, New Discoveries, for ages 4-10, at Montclair Community Pre-K, and Camp at the Lake, for ages 5-14, at the Outdoor Education Center in West Milford Township. Extended care hours are available for all three, as is financial assistance.

The company’s Musical Theater Day Camp for ages 7-12 runs July 12-30, culminating in an outdoor performance of “Willy Wonka Kids.” Campers will have an option to add on a four-day week at the start, July 6-9, to brush up on their musical theater skills. Camp will take place in Vanguard’s new theater at 180 Bloomfield Ave., with outdoor play time at Glenfield Park.
Summerstock Sleepaway for ages 12-19 will be at Camp Vacamas in West Milford, July 25 – Aug. 15. Modeled on the pro-sport “bubble” prototype, everyone will remain on-site for the duration of camp, with no outside travel or visitors permitted.

Jazz House Kids

Jazz House Kids offers summer sessions from June 7 to July 23.

There are weekly small ensembles featuring the compositions of jazz’s iconic composers. Students can immerse themselves in the music of these legendary composers and learn the improvised language they used to create their unique sound.

Students may sign up for multiple weekly ensembles and can choose from among 11, eight in-person and three online.

There are also five weekly online skill-based electives: Music Production, Young Composer’s Workshop, Film Scoring, Drum Shed and Improv: Sharpening Our Tools.

There is a May 24 deadline for registration, summer sessions tuition assistance application and video audition placement (new students).

Jazz House Kids also offers summer programs at Montclair State University, and separate summer programs for adults.

Among classes offered for teens are Ceramics, Digital Drawing With Graphic Design and Oil and Acrylic Easel Painting.

Classes will take place in the museum’s spacious studios and outdoors on the museum grounds. All COVID-19 guidelines, including mask-wearing and social distancing, will be followed. Campers will be provided with their own art supplies so materials will not be shared. Scholarships are available.

Shakespeare Theatre of N.J.

The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey’s Shakespeare Corps returns this summer with in-person and virtual programming for young people ages 10–18.
The programs aim to provide students from across the region clear instruction, individual attention and thoughtful and candid evaluation in a professional theater environment.
The Theatre will launch its first virtual Shakespeare camp this summer with one-week classes June 28 to July 2, with morning and afternoon sessions for younger and older students, respectively.

There will also be in-person programs in a full-day model, five days a week. The Junior Shakespeare Corps is for ages 10-14, from first-time performers to budding stars. Its focus is ensemble, and the session culminates in a presentation that involves the entire group in retelling a piece of classic literature through performance.

The Senior Shakespeare Corps is for teens ages 14-18 who are serious about growing as performers. The session culminates in a presentation of Shakespearean text.

Shakespeare Corps enrollment will be limited, and each session will be conducted according to state regulations regarding health and safety.
