Mary Lorene Dunn Malone, a longtime resident of Montclair, died at home on Thursday, April 29, 2021. She was 83.
Mrs. Malone was born in Alton, Virginia, in 1937 to Fleming Dunn and Ana Roberta Lea. She attended Mary M. Bethune High School and graduated in 1957. Thereafter, she met and married John Robert Malone in 1957.
The couple moved from Alton to Montclair, where they had two daughters, Tammy L’yvonne and Theresa Ann.
Mrs. Malone was a housewife for a while, until she began volunteering at Edgemont School. Eventually she was employed by the Montclair Board of Education. She loved her work as a teacher’s aide and a special education teacher’s aide.
She was an active member at Union Baptist Church for over 20 years as a Sunday School teacher. She loved working with everyone.
Her favorite pastimes were tending to her house plants, planting flowers in her garden and watching the Mets play ball.
Mrs. Malone is survived by her two daughters, Tammy Malone Handy and Theresa Strickland; a son-in-law, Eric Handy; two granddaughters, T.E. Alexia Strickland and Taja Strickland; her great-grandson, Terrence Williamson Jr.; two sisters, Anna Dunn Bullock and Shirley Dunn; two brothers, Fleming Dunn and James Dunn, and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Robert Malone, her brothers, John Dunn and Rufus Dunn, and her sister, SeDorothy Hand.
Private services are Thursday, May 6, with interment at Rosedale Cemetery.
Arrangements were by Martin’s Home for Service.
