I was glad to see your front-page coverage of the new community energy aggregation program in Montclair. This is a wonderful opportunity for Montclair residents to make a difference for the environment. We at Montclair Climate Action certainly hope that Montclair residents will not opt-out.
In fact, since opting out means paying higher prices for dirtier energy, residents should say a strong “yes!” to the program. But we want to encourage Montclair residents to go a step farther and “opt in” to the 100% renewable energy option. We have all seen the effects of climate change in the headlines — rising seas, wildfires, killer storms, extreme weather, climate refugees forced out of their homes. If we don’t take action, things will only get worse, so the time to take action is now — and fortunately, Montclair has given us an easy way to do that, by opting up to 100% renewable energy as part of the energy aggregation program.
For a very modest sum – about $5 per month for the average Montclair household — you can support renewable energy in our region, encourage other companies to invest in this growing sector, and make an investment in clean energy that will help future generations. In short, it will be money well spent. All you need to do to opt-up is call the electricity supplier, Energy Harbor, at 866-636-3749, by March 7. The Sustainable Essex Alliance has done its homework to make sure these are high-quality renewable sources, and because there are so many households in the program, it was able to get a good rate — significantly better than rates you would be able to get on your own. So if you are willing to invest $5 a month in the future of our children and grandchildren, we hope you will take this opportunity and opt-up to 100% renewable energy.
