After Montclair extended the deadline for property tax payments last quarter by one month, that will not be the case for payments due in August.

In May, the township extended the May 1 due date to June 1. As a result of the extension, no interest was charged to property owners who paid their taxes on or before June 1.

On Tuesday, July 28, the township sent out a reminder that third-quarter property tax payments are due Aug. 1, with a 10-day grace period. No interest would be charged if taxes were paid by Aug. 11.

Township officials reported that 95 percent of resident property owners and 93 percent of commercial property owners  had paid their second-quarter taxes.

The Montclair municipal building remains closed until further notice. In-person bill payments are no longer being accepted by the township. Checks may be dropped into the payments slot located at the front of the municipal building, next to the U.S. Postal Service mailbox. Envelopes must be clearly marked as to which department they should go to.

Township officials said that the Tax Collector’s Office often receives checks that are made out incorrectly — missing a date or signature, or with the text amount not matching the number amount, or with other problems that could result in a delinquent payment.

The tax office encourages property owners to pay their tax bills online with an e-check. The reimbursement of e-check charges continues until further notice, and the Finance Department is working to eliminate e-check fees altogether.
