Mary Veal, formerly of Montclair, died on Wednesday, April 29. She was 88.
Mary was born on Jan. 22, 1932, in Paterson, the daughter of Walter and Emily Curvy.
She was raised in Paterson, where she attended the local schools, including Eastside High School. On Jan. 6, 1951, she married Benjamin Veal, who was a neighborhood friend.
After marrying, Ben and Mary moved to California with their infant son, Benjamin Jr. While in California, a daughter, Karen, was born.
Mary started her career working for California Bell Telephone Co. After living in California for seven years, the family returned to New Jersey. They lived in Montclair and Summit, and eventually settled in Verona. A second daughter, Kathy, was born in 1962, during the time they lived in Summit.
While raising her three children, Mary worked at New Jersey Bell Telephone Co. in Newark, Madison, and East Orange. She held various positions during her time at N.J. Bell. She ended her career as a supervisor in the data processing department.
Mary retired from Bell Atlantic in 1987 and spent time with the Pioneers, a volunteer organization made up of retirees from Bell Atlantic who collected and made helpful items for people in need. She also enjoyed ushering, participating in arts and crafts classes, and worshiping and traveling with her friends at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Montclair. Mary volunteered at the Verona Service League for several years.
Completing the crossword puzzle in several papers daily was a daily exercise for her memory. Mary enjoyed walking in Verona Park with her husband, and spending time with her family. She especially had a great time attending her grandsons’ football and basketball games. She was always very supportive of her grandsons, and encouraged them to do their best. She enjoyed traveling with her entire family. Mary leaves many fond memories.
She was predeceased by her husband Benjamin, daughter Kathy, sisters Alma, Dorothy, Helen, and Betty, and brothers Donald and George.
Those left to cherish her love of family are son Benjamin Veal, Jr., daughter-in-law Debra, daughter Karen, son-in-law David, grandsons Justin and Dac, sisters Joan Rembert and Shirley Speights, brother George Curvy, and a host of other family members and friends.
