Overnight parking offenders that rack up two tickets in a year will soon get double the fine on the second offense.

A $35 fine for the first offense, will now be $70 for the second offense, and $140 for the third and subsequent offenses.

At Councilman Sean Spiller’s suggestion, the first offense will expire at one year.

Councilwoman Renee Baskerville said that repeat violations had become a problem for street sweepers and trash collections, and the town had difficulty with enforcement.

In September, out of 1,400 overnight parking violations, 210 were repeat offenders, according to a report compiled by township manager Tim Stafford.

The council had also suggested the tickets should note the increase in fines with subsequent offenses.
