Eucharia Rose Pilsbury, 90, of Upper Montclair, died at home on Saturday, July 21, 2018, surrounded by family.

Known to family and friends as Cary, she was born on December 28, 1927, in Bloomfield to the late Harry P. Riordan and Katherine Riordan (nee Kenny). She was raised in Bloomfield and graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Montclair in 1946.

Mrs. Pilsbury was the wife of the late Vincent Edmund Pilsbury. They married in 1949 and soon moved to Upper Montclair, where they lived until his death in 1991. During their 40-year marriage, they raised 11 children.

She was a member of St. Cassian Parish, and served on the pastoral council, as lector, eucharistic minister, CCD (Confraternity of Christian Doctrine) teacher, and a prayer group leader.

In the mid-1970s, Mrs. Pilsbury emerged as a ground-breaking entrepreneur in the education industry, being one of the first to own and operate a private childcare business. She ultimately transformed an at-home venture into a state-certified nursery school by 1980. Mrs. Pilsbury was owner/director of Pilsbury Nursery School until retiring in 2014. The school continues on serving the Montclair community and surrounding area.

Mrs. Pilsbury loved to travel and visited many different parts of the world, often with the St. Cassian parish tour groups.

Mrs. Pilsbury married Frank (Chick) Koebel of Upper Montclair in 2006. She took great joy in the union and camaraderie of their two combined families, which included Chick’s ten children and their families. Together, they cherished their 11 years of marriage.

She was preceded in death by both her parents, her first husband Vincent E. Pilsbury, her brother John X. Riordan, sister-in-law Clare Jenkins Riordan, and daughter-in-law Gail Greatorex Pilsbury.

Mrs. Pilsbury is survived by her husband Frank (Chick) Koebel; four sons, Stephen (Nina) Pilsbury, Guy Pilsbury, Mark Pilsbury, and Paul (Lori) Pilsbury; seven daughters, Kitty Pilsbury, Marie Pilsbury, Deborah (Lloyd) Gialanella, Kristine Pilsbury, Diane (Ken) Payne, Cynthia (John) Benson, and JoAnne (Martin) Fanizzi; 26 grandchildren, Shannon (Matt) Munson, Kellen (Brian) Scardino, Erin Pilsbury, Vincent Smith, Justin Smith, Wendy (Joe) Gugliuzza, Guy (Amy) Pilsbury II, Troy (Marysia) Pilsbury, Cory Pilsbury, Amy Pilsbury, Kevin Pilsbury, Kaitlyn Pilsbury, Matthew Hixson, Jennifer Hixson, Carianne Hixson, Louie Gialanella, Kimberly Pilsbury, Daniel Pilsbury, Sean Payne, Nicole Payne, Jonathan Benson, Jack Benson, Shane Benson, Blaize Benson, Luke Fanizzi, and Jaime Fanizzi; and 12 great-grandchildren, Skye Gugliuzza, Gail Gugliuzza, Paige Gugliuzza, Jenny Gugliuzza, Jayne Gugliuzza, Audrey Gugliuzza, Guy Pilsbury III, Wyatt Pilsbury, Thomas Pilsbury, Robert Pilsbury, Marysia Pilsbury, and Karolina Pilsbury and Koebel’s nine children, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday, July 26, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Hugh M. Moriarty Funeral Home, 76 Park St., Montclair.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Friday, July 27, at 10 a.m. in Saint Cassian Church, 187 Bellevue Ave., Upper Montclair. Interment will follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery.
