Marlis Dunn, 71, of North Truro, Mass., died on Dec.18 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was a Montclair resident for 35 years.

A Catholic Mass was held Dec. 23 at St. Joan of Arc Church in Orleans, Mass. A celebration of her life will be held in the spring.

Mrs. Dunn was born in 1946 on a farm in Germany’s Black Forest.

Her village of Ebnet had a one-room schoolhouse, where she spent all nine years of her primary education, with all the other grades present and one teacher for everyone.

Mrs. Dunn left Germany at the age of 14 and live with her aunt in New Jersey. Speaking no English and carrying a cardboard suitcase, she flew by herself from Zurich to New York’s Idlewild airport, now John F. Kennedy International Airport. She worked in the family bakery and quickly mastered English. She then became a maid and a nanny to earn money while in high school. She graduated from Montclair State University and attended the Woodstock rock festival. She had a career of more than 20 years on Madison Avenue in Manhattan in the graphics and advertising industry.

She was an accomplished artist and painted scores of works using a variety of media. In last October she had own show in Provincetown, Mass., where many of her paintings were sold. She loved all animals and painted oil portraits of pets.

She is survived by her husband, Frank; three stepchildren, Kerry, Sarah and Zachary Dunn; a brother, Arnold Spauschus, and his wife, Gitte; a sister, Rosa, and her husband, Bertold; three nieces, Cindy Kaiser, Silke Jaeger and her husband, Gunther, and Anika Spauschus and her husband, Thomas; and a nephew, Hardy Kaiser, and his wife, Marion. Her cousins include Rich Ege, Rudy Kellmann and his wife, Carol, Lisa Kellmann, Anita Beaumont and her husband, Howard, as well as Klaus and Brigitte Isele. Two Aunts survive, Anna Kellmann and Flora Isele.  Sisters-in-law were Maureen Dunn Juliano and Eileen Dunn Kobel, husband Kurt and Robert Harrer, brother in law, and her nieces Cara Juliano, Shannon Grubich, Danielle Harrer and nephew, Tim Harrer. Also by her friends Janet Masucci, Arlette Engel, Diana Lee, Rich Fedorchak and Lisa Scapalatti.
