The SOMA Film Festival will have its second season this weekend, Friday, March 10, through Sunday, March 12. SOMA Film Festival Director Matt Smollon said in a release, “In our second year, we made a concerted effort to bring a slate of films that are strong start to finish, and move our town’s festival in the direction of other great festivals in New Jersey and beyond.”
The 2017 festival presents more than 30 independent short and feature-length documentary and narrative films from 11 countries. Some of the highlights include Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary, “Fire at Sea”; a feature documentary from Italy about the European migrant crisis, and “Hear the Silence,” a narrative feature from Germany set in World War II in a small village in Ukraine. For the first time this season, there will be an entire shorts program dedicated to local filmmakers and a selection of shorts celebrating the cinema program at Seton Hall University, which is in South Orange.  There will be an opening night party on Thursday, March 9, and filmmaker Q&As throughout the festival. The festival takes place at the South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC), One SOPAC Way, South Orange.
