Congregation Shomrei Emunah of Montclair announces that Lily Lucey, the assistant education director for the synagogue’s Jewish Learning Center, is assuming an additional new role as a Rabbinic Intern. Lucey is currently beginning her second year working toward her ordination at The Academy for Jewish Religion in Yonkers. Focusing on community building, Lucey’s new duties include developing additional intergenerational programming that include Friday, theme-based night services combining traditional prayers with popular song melodies.
Also under development are special holiday programs, for Hanukkah, Purim, Passover and Shavuot that will be held outdoors at South Mountain Reservation. She will also launch an initiative to expand the congregation’s commitment to social action.
“I was drawn to become a rabbi because of connection: connection to the past, present, and future of Judaism, to each other, and to the world around us,” explained Lucy. “Delving into these connections with a Jewish lens, and exploring them with the people around me, is a joy and honor that deepens for me each day as I walk this journey.”
For the past two years, Lucey has been part of the JLC education team dedicated to implementing a new student-centered religious school model with experiential and project-based instruction through innovative projects, artistically through music, art and drama, and physically through movement-based learning. She also leads Shabbat morning services for young and older students, a monthly “Hinei Mah Tov” service for families.
During the approaching High Holidays, she will lead the family services on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
High Holy Day services at Congregation Shomrei Emunah, are open to the public, free of charge. Shomrei Emunah is at 67 Park St.
